Life is not always easy on the rich, according to the U2 bandmembers. U2 drummer Larry Mullen thinks rich and successful people are being unnnecessarily humiliated at Dublin Airport, going in and out of the country. He thinks the resentment extends throughout Ireland though, and that the treatment at the airport is “part of a new resentment of rich people in this country”.

According to Mullen, the U2 bandmembers have “experienced [a situation] where coming in and out of the country at certain times is made more difficult than it should be – not only for us, but for a lot of wealthy people. So it wasn’t personal. It was to do with the better-off being sort of humiliated.”

According to Mullen, the people of Ireland should appreciate their entrepreneurs more, and be more grateful for the time and money they spend on improving the economic situation of their country:

“Love them or loathe them, all those rich wives, all those rich guys with all those balls, all those women that you see organising this and organising that, without them we’d be in a very, very different state than we are now. A lot of people who are well off in this country make huge contributions with their time and with their money.”

Bono seemed to agree with the U2 drummer, saying Irish people are becoming increasingly “sour”. “Melancholy and bile are not our greatest traits,” says Bono.

All of these things were said while the band was being interviewed in Barcelona, where U2 were rehearsing last week for their world tour. The tour in promotion of their album ‘No Line on the Horizon’ features extravagant special effects and a 360-degree stage.

Should the Irish people stop picking on the rich? Or should the U2 bandmembers stop picking on the Irish?
