Real Madrid’s performance in their opening Champions League group match left no one in any doubt about their capabilities and shortcomings. A 5-2 win at FC Zurich showed why many think the latest batch of Galácticos will become Champions of Europe, whilst perhaps just as many took it as evidence as why they will not win the Champions League. The balance between defence and attack was more than adequate against inferior opposition, but tougher tasks lay ahead.

Manuel Pellegrini’s outfit opened their La Liga campaign with a 3-2 home win over Deportivo, which helped develop the belief that Real will be nearly as much associated with conceding goals this season as scoring them. An impressive 3-0 win at Espanyol followed and both manager and chairman will be as happy with the clean sheet as they were with the trio of goals. Florentino Pérez is acutely aware of the criticism of his Galácticos policy, so defensive solidity is crucial.

Pérez’s knew this when embarking on his latest spending spree. Kaká, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema might have grabbed the headlines as the major signings, but plenty of money was spent on strengthening the backline, with Raul Albiol and Alvaro Arbeloa arriving to provide a Spanish flavour to the back four. However, the €35m purchase of Xabi Alonso, Pérez’s final piece in the jigsaw, might prove to be the most important signing.
Alonso will screen the defence in much same way as Claude Makelele did during Real’s most successful era in recent times. Pérez now knows the importance of the holding midfielder (although the former Liverpool man is also crucial to the attack) and will not make the mistake of ostracising Alonso, as he did Makelele.

The new-look Real line-up will take some time to gel and according to the football betting odds, spectacular results should not be expected instantly. A good defensive unit takes longer to build than the offensive part of the team, so goals will be leaked early on. Nonetheless, the suspicion remains that Real are more intent on attack than defence, so we might get used to highscoring games at the Bernabéu.
