The early settling of the 09/10 Premier League table ( is a relatively recent development. The top flight league table once took a long time to properly develop. Teams could jockey for position throughout the season and rapidly rise to its top with a good run of form. Nowadays the ‘haves and have nots’ are divided early.

True, Hull City made a stunning start to last season and were on course for a European place nearly as much as they were for relegation, but the adage that the table doesn’t lie is suddenly more apparent than ever.

The top six is currently comprised of Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Aston Villa. Only Arsenal are missing from the list of likely top six finishers and their two early defeats by the Manchester teams hardly constitute a crisis.

Similarly, the bottom six is made up of Portsmouth, Everton, Bolton Wanderers, Hull, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City. Five of the hot favourites for relegation are already in the mire, with only Everton raising eyebrows by their current plight.

Backing Chelsea to be champions and Portsmouth to finish bottom would not have been the craziest early season football bet and their respective current form makes it hard to argue a case against them changing their positions come May.

All this suggests the Premier League is predictable and unattractive. However, as exciting as it is to have Manchester City establishing themselves as genuine title contenders, boredom with current state of affairs is not likely to set in. All football fans know that the journey to the finishing point is as important as the final position itself.
